R8 series
R8 servo drives – 400 W to 3 kW, pulse or EtherCAT
The machine-builder's drive: fast current loop, absolute feedback, and an internal 16-position indexer that removes the motion controller on simple axes.
R8 response starts in the current loop: current sampling at 16 kHz, a speed loop bandwidth of 1.3 kHz on pulse-type drives and 1.6 kHz on bus-type drives, and torque feedforward that can cut position settling time to 5–6 ms. Speed loop bandwidth means the highest speed-command frequency to which the system responds.
Feedback is absolute: 17-bit or 23-bit single-turn or multi-turn encoders, the multi-turn versions retaining absolute position over 65,535 revolutions.
On EtherCAT the drive provides 2×100 Mbps full duplex over simple wiring and a refresh time of 100 axes × 1 µs/axis = 0.1 ms. A 1 ms synchronization cycle is standard, and below 1 ms the drive accepts integer multiples of 250 µs; high-speed interpolation turns that bus performance into accuracy at the load.
For stand-alone positioning, an internal multi-position function provides 16 internal positions, multi-point continuous motion, point parameters changeable while running, relative and absolute positioning and DI enable control; with homing it covers basic sequences without a motion controller.
16 kHz current sampling
With torque feedforward, position settling drops to 5-6 ms — visible on a short indexing move.
Rigidity table + notch filter
Parameter auto-adjustment with feedforward, offline and online inertia identification, and mechanical characteristic identification.
16 internal positions
Multi-point continuous motion with point parameters changeable while running; relative and absolute positioning with DI enable.
Braking built in
A braking resistor from 750 W upward; the -B suffix adds dynamic braking on the 400 W and 750 W models.

Model range
R8 drive range
Power rating, supply and command interface. Every rating is offered as a P (pulse/analog + RS485) or Z (EtherCAT) variant; CANopen (C) is available on the lower ratings.
| Rated power | Supply | Command interface | Encoder | Frame W×H×D (mm) | Mass |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 400 W | 1-phase 220 V | P (pulse/analog + RS485) · Z (EtherCAT) · C (CANopen) | 17 / 23-bit absolute | 50 × 160 × 173 | 1.0 kg |
| 750 W | 1-phase 220 V | P · Z · C | 17 / 23-bit absolute | 50 × 160 × 173 | 1.0 kg |
| 1000 W | 1-phase 220 V | P · Z (compact -S frame) | 17 / 23-bit absolute | 57 × 199 × 182 | 1.5 kg |
| 1500 W | 1-phase / 3-phase 220 V | P · Z | 17 / 23-bit absolute | 57 × 199 × 182 | 1.5 kg |
| 2600 W | 1-phase / 3-phase 220 V | P · Z | 17 / 23-bit absolute | 90 × 160 × 181 | 2.0 kg |
| 3000 W | 3-phase 380 V | P · Z | 17 / 23-bit absolute | 90 × 160 × 181 | 2.0 kg |
Frames are W × H × D in millimetres. The 1000 W rating has a compact -S frame; a braking resistor is built in from 750 W upward.
Ordering code
Build an R8 drive code
R8-2208P-N names the series (R8), the supply voltage (22 for single/three-phase 220 V, 38 for three-phase 380 V), the power code, the communication type (P pulse, Z EtherCAT, C CANopen) and an option code (N standard, S simplified, B dynamic braking).
Selection notes
How to choose within the range
- Pulse or bus? Pulse (P) suits retrofits and small axis counts; EtherCAT (Z) is the answer once a machine coordinates several axes or needs sub-millisecond synchronisation.
- Encoder choice is two independent decisions — 17 or 23-bit, magnetic or optical — each in single-turn or multi-turn form. Multi-turn needs the six-core cable with battery wires.
- A holding brake is selected through the motor code and needs 24 V DC; DO3 on CN1 defaults to brake output.
- Standard cable lengths are cheaper and stock faster. Beyond 15 m the cores get thicker and the price rises noticeably.
